from Florence to Chianti Region
This Is one of those well-known wines whose names immediately call to mind their region of origin. Chianti is a red wine produced in the districts around Arezzo, Florence, Pisa, Pistoia and Siena, and the Chianti Vineyard is the largest in Tuscany as regards acreage and production. The characteristics of the soil and other conditions vary considerably from one sector to another and the wine pro duced in them Is equally different. The blends of grapes are, however, the same Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero, Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia del Chianti and they produce a deep ruby red wine with a heady bouquet, the ideal accompaniment for Tuscan cooking. The word Classicř is reserved for wine produced in the district straddling the provinces of Florence and Siena, This Is the region famous in the Middie Ages for the Chianti League. The Chianti Classico consortium, which was set up in 1924 to control production, took over the League’s emblem, the blackcock erel (gallo nero) and began to reproduce it on the wine bottles. Gradually the emblem became synonymous with classico wines. A second consortium was then founded in oppositiOn to Chianti, Under the general name of Chlanti Putto and the emblem of a cherub, to act as an umbrella organization for the other denominazione Montalbano, Rufina, Colli Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colli Aretini and Colline Pisane; the title Is granted only to wines produced with grapes harvested and made into wine within the respective areas.
